I am a goalie, goalie dad, and goalie coach from Saskatoon, SK, Canada. Before becoming an elementary school principal, I worked in Sports Retail and as a Head Instructor at The Mayfair Goalie Crease, which is where the name for this new venture comes from.
Whether you're a seasoned veteran between the pipes, a young prospect with dreams of stardom, or simply a passionate hockey fan, you've come to the right place. This blog is dedicated to providing you with the latest tips, insights, and gear reviews to help you elevate your game and enjoy the journey as a goalie or goalie parent.
As a goalie, you are the backbone of your team. You are the last line of defence, the one who stands tall in the face of relentless pressure. Here at The Crease Goalie, we understand the unique challenges and triumphs that come with this position. Our mission is to support you every step of the way, from perfecting your stance to selecting the best equipment.
Our First Fitting Post: Goalie Skates
To kick things off, we're diving into one of the most critical pieces of gear for any goalie: skates. Properly fitting goalie skates are essential for optimal performance and injury prevention. Unlike player skates, goalie skates are designed with specific features to accommodate the unique demands of the position. Let's break down the key elements of fitting goalie skates.

The Importance of Fit
A well-fitted skate ensures that you have the stability, mobility, and comfort needed to make those game-saving stops. An ill-fitting skate can lead to discomfort, blisters, and even long-term foot issues. When fitting goalie skates, consider the following factors:
Size and Length: Goalie skates should fit snugly, with minimal extra space. Your toes should lightly brush the end of the skate when standing, but not be cramped. Many brands recommend going half a size down from your regular shoe size.
Width: Every person has a different foot width, and this is important to pay attention to when buying skates. I have the widest feet I have ever seen, which made buying skates challenging when I was a kid, but they have come a long way since. Make sure the skate width accommodates your foot without causing pressure points. Many brands offer skates in various widths to cater to different foot shapes.
Ankle Support: Proper ankle support is crucial for goalies. The skate should provide a secure fit around the ankle without restricting movement. Look for skates with adjustable features, such as customizable ankle padding or thermoformable materials that mold to your foot.
Blade and Holder: Goalie skates feature a flatter blade profile and a lower cut boot compared to player skates. This design enhances stability and allows for quick lateral movements. Ensure the blade is properly aligned and the holder is securely attached to the boot.

The Fitting Process
Try Them On: Always try on goalie skates with the same type of socks you wear during games. Lace them up to your preference, starting from the toe and working your way up. Stand up and walk around to get a feel for the fit.
Heat Molding: Many goalie skates come with heat-molding capabilities. This process involves heating the skate in an oven to soften the materials, then wearing them to mold the fit to your foot. This can significantly enhance comfort and reduce break-in time.
In-Store Fitting: If possible, visit a specialized hockey store with knowledgeable staff who can assist with fitting. They can provide personalized advice and make adjustments on the spot.
Final Tips
Break-In Period: Give yourself time to break in new skates before jumping into a game. Wear them during practice sessions to gradually get used to the fit and feel.
Custom Insoles: Consider investing in custom insoles for added comfort and support. These can help alleviate pressure points and enhance overall fit.
